Fulfilling a commitment made earlier this year, Metro General Manager/CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld has announced that Metro is making available the real-time location of trains, allowing developers to create more accurate and advanced mobile apps that will enhance the rider experience.

“We heard loud and clear from our riders that being able to easily find accurate, real-time information was important to customers during their commute,” Wiedefeld said. “This is just one way that we can give customers the information they want while simultaneously leveraging the expertise of third-party developers.”

Metro’s real-time train position data is now available to the developer community at developer.wmata.com. With this data, third-party developers can build apps using accurate train locations much like GPS tracking on a bus. As part of Wiedefeld’s Customer Accountability Report (CARe), Metro is partnering with developers to enhance the rider experience, making it easier to access train and bus departures, trip planning and other customer information on demand.
