British Transport Police (BTP) officers want to hear from any witnesses to the incident, which occurred at the Horwood Road Railway Depot in Splott at around 7:15 a.m. on Saturday, July 9.

Detective Constable Chris Bolton from BTP said, “Having completed his checks of the depot, the security guard returned to his office to discover a man wearing a high visibility vest looking into his van.

“Knowing he wasn’t an employee at the depot, the guard confronted the man and told him to leave the premises. As he began walking away, the man said that he’d taken the guard’s van keys, so he began pursuing the intruder. The man immediately became violent and began hurling large stones at the guard, who was forced to flee towards his office.

“While the guard was taking refuge and calling the police, the man proceeded to throw a number of stones at the van and smashed some of its windows, allowing him to steal a leaf blower, worth around £400,  from inside before escaping towards the Moorland Road bridge, Beresford Road and Railway Street areas.

“This was a frightening incident for the victim, who was hit to his back, hips and legs by the stones. It is imperative that we speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time or who may have seen or heard anything about this incident.”

The man is described as white, aged 20 to 25, around 5-foot 8 inches to 5-foot 10 inches, of a slim build, with cropped mousy colored hair in a side parting. He had a Cardiff accent and was wearing a high visibility jacket, blue jeans and trainers.

Detectives are also appealing to anyone who may have been offered a bright yellow Sabar petrol leaf blower for sale over the past few days to get in touch.

“Given its bright color, size and weight, this is a distinctive item which is easily recognizable,” said DC Bolton. “It may be that someone has been approached over the past few days by someone with such an item for sale. If that is the case, we would like to hear from you.”
