The city of Atlanta announced Oct. 15 that the Fulton County Superior Court has ruled in its favor and has dismissed all claims made by AT&T Georgia, which had sued for reimbursement of more than $5 million in costs associated with relocating utilities. This win confirms that Georgia law allows the city of Atlanta to order the relocation of a utility’s facilities to accommodate the construction of the Atlanta Streetcar. The court issued its ruling late Oct. 14.
“This victory validates the city’s authority to continue to implement vital transit and infrastructure projects that will revitalize and enhance the downtown area,” said City Attorney Cathy Hampton.
The Atlanta Streetcar began transporting riders on Dec. 30, as part of a grand vision for a new era of transit. It is designed to transform mobility and connectivity of communities and businesses within the city of Atlanta. Since opening day, more than 600,000 people have taken a ride on the streetcar to visit tourist and cultural attractions, go shopping or dine at one of the many restaurants along the route.
