Réchaud Bus: A Coup de Cœur Award for People Who Care

April 15, 2015

Initiated by retired STM employees, the Réchaud Bus received the first Coup de cœur award (people’s choice) by Radio-Canada staff, as part of the Gens de cœur competition. The team behind the Réchaud Bus project was visibly moved by this gesture, knowing that the Gens de cœuraward serves to give recognition to volunteers who, through their commitment, make an exceptional contribution to their community. The Réchaud Bus was chosen above four other finalist projects that were submitted to a vote by Radio-Canada employees.

Several people involved in this endeavour were on hand to receive the award, presented during the show Pour le plaisir, broadcast by Radio-Canada.

Food and comfort

Active for 20 years now, the bus transformed into a mobile kitchen heads out into the streets of Montréal five nights a week, distributing meals and snacks, smiles and hope to children in the city’s underprivileged areas. The non-profit organization is the initiative of STM employees and retirees who volunteer for the cause.

Each year, the organization visits some 52 schools and 36 youth centres, serving up about 8,000 meals aboard the bus, which adds up to over $400,000 in food. All of that is made possible thanks to active and retired STM staff who fund the entire operation.
