After several months of cooperative negotiations, Pierce Transit has sold its Bonney Lake Park-and-Ride facility to Sound Transit for $2.7 million.

The facility, located at 9101 Sky Island Drive East in Bonney Lake, serves ST Express Route 596, which connects Bonney Lake area commuters to the Sounder commuter rail station in nearby Sumner.  The Pierce Transit Board declared the property as surplus real property and authorized its sale last June.

Pierce Transit opened the Bonney Lake Park-and-Ride in 2001.  The facility featured 356 parking stalls and a transit island with operator restroom facilities.  In 2012, the cities of Bonney Lake and Sumner opted out of the Pierce Transit service area boundary, but Pierce Transit continued to maintain the Park and Ride.  In early 2013, Pierce Transit approached Sound Transit about a possible sale of the facility and the two agencies completed the deal on October 17.  By purchasing and preserving the facility, Sound Transit will maintain commuter parking capacity in Pierce County as its Sounder south line continues to grow.

Visitors to the Bonney Lake Park-and-Ride may notice the absence of the metal sculpture that graced the outer wall.  The sculpture will soon be relocated to the Pierce Transit Training Center in Lakewood where it will be on display for the public’s enjoyment.
