SamTrans announced the winners of the annual county-wide student art competition Art Takes a Bus Ride at its regular board meeting.

The winning entries were selected by a panel of judges from the San Mateo County Arts Commission.

The artists, who are in first to sixth grade, were asked to illustrate the theme “SamTrans: See the County.” The students’ work illustrates popular destinations for SamTrans riders.

Third grader Emily Jiwon Hwang used colored pencil to draw a SamTrans bus with wings that can clearly go anywhere. Nikaella Mariano, a fourth grader, used a combination of markers and colored pencil for her illustration of a SamTrans bus stopping at a park full of children.

Mia Hariri-Turner, a first grader, used crayon and pencil for her drawing of a bus pulling up to Central School in Belmont. Myles Hu, a second grader, used markers and water colors for a drawing of a SamTrans bus stopping at Central Park in San Mateo.

Fifth grader Jessica Liu used colored pencil for her drawing of SamTrans serving Redwood Shores, complete with a bus stop sign and the geese and ducks found in the area. Aidan Walker, a sixth grader, used paint, crayon and markers for a sophisticated depiction that used the artistic device of a “picture within a picture.”  The drawing shows the artist’s work, midway through the process, with parts of the drawing incomplete.

All of the winning entries are featured on ad cards inside SamTrans buses and on the outside of SamTrans’ rolling art gallery, known as the Art Bus.  The Art Bus will operate in regular SamTrans service for the next year. The winning entries also are posted on the SamTrans website.

The winning artists received a SamTrans Summer Youth Pass, art supplies, a certificate and a framed copy of the bus ad card showcasing their art.

This is the 10th year that SamTrans has partnered with the San Mateo County Office of Education to sponsor the art contest.
