On Saturday, February 8, Valley Metro celebrated a significant milestone for the 3.1-mile extension of light rail in central Mesa. Mesa Mayor Scott Smith and dignitaries from Mesa, Chandler and Gilbert participated in the first official rail weld in the guideway of this future extension. Contractor, Valley Transit Constructors (VTC), narrated the rail weld process while welding students from East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) assisted and observed.
The event included remarks by Mayor Smith and Valley Metro Rail Board Vice Chair and Mesa Councilmember Dennis Kavanaugh. Attendees received a commemorative pin marking the third major milestone in the construction of the extension. Service east to central and downtown Mesa should begin in late 2015/early 2016.
