Rail technology leader Bombardier Transportation has won a major new signalling order to deliver the globally-proven BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 mass transit train control solution for the new Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) Sungai Buloh - Kajang (SBK) Line being constructed in Klang Valley, Malaysia. Once completed, the 51km SBK line will serve 1.2 million people, significantly increasing transportation connections in the Greater Kuala Lumpur area and its surrounding cities and reducing the number of cars entering the capital.

The five-year contract, valued at approximately 281 million Malaysian ringgit (71 million euro or $92 million US) is awarded by Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), the owner and developer of the line. The KVMRT project is a Government of Malaysia initiative under the Greater Kuala Lumpur/ Klang Valley National Key Economic Area of the Economic Transformation Programme.

Bombardier's scope will comprise the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the CITYFLO 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) solution for driverless operation on this first line, including 31 stations and onboard equipment for 58 trains plus a further 16 maintenance vehicles. Throughout the execution of this contract, with the last stages planned to enter revenue service in 2017, Bombardier will also contribute to Malaysia's rail industry by developing local expertise.

Richard Hunter, Head of Asia Pacific and Vice President for Rail Control Solutions, Bombardier Transportation said: "This is an important new signalling contract for Bombardier in Malaysia reflecting the customer's confidence in our state-of-the-art CBTC solution and project delivery experience. We look forward to working with MRT Corp and the project delivery partner MMC-Gamuda JV on this important contribution to easing urban traffic flow and enabling greater connectivity between populated residential districts, business and commercial hubs and key employment areas in the Greater Kuala Lumpur region."

"We are very pleased to be awarded this new contract," added David Allen, Head of Bombardier Transportation in Malaysia and Vice President for Systems, Asia Pacific region. "We have an established operational presence in Kuala Lumpur and are committed to developing our market presence and adding to our experience here. Our CITYFLO 650 technology brings sustainable solutions to Malaysia by delivering high capacity and reliability in its application, improving safety and reduced maintenance costs."

CITYFLO 650 is a highly-proven, automatic train control solution for driverless or unattended train operations designed for metros and Automated People Movers (APM). A moving block CBTC system, modern radio-based area networks communicate between the control centre and the train. This advanced solution leads to improved safety, higher capacity and reliability, shorter headways between trains and reduced maintenance costs. Around the globe CITYFLO 650 is in operation on 16 lines, from Shenzhen in China to Madrid, to San Francisco. The latest applications are being delivered on the London Underground (LU), UK, for the four-line Sub Surface Railway signalling upgrade, and on the Sao Paolo Metro in Brazil, as well as in China, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and USA.
