If April showers rain on Cincinnati, savvy transit riders will be prepared – thanks to Metro and Cincinnati’s Green Umbrella, the regional sustainability initiative. In honor of Earth Day, the first 500 people who purchase a Metro 30-day rolling pass from the Metro Sales Office will receive a free green Metro umbrella, starting April 16.
The green umbrella is intended to remind riders of the regional “What’s Your Green Umbrella?” campaign to get more people to do more good things for the environment in measurable ways. The campaign, including a website where visitors can register their “green actions” such as riding Metro, is a collaboration between Cincinnati’s Office of Environmental Quality and Green Umbrella, Inc. Metro’s green business practices make the transit agency a fitting partner for this regional effort, found online at www.whatsyourgreenumbrella.org.
It’s estimated that an individual who rides Metro instead of driving a car will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 4,800 pounds each year. Nationally, public transportation uses saves 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline each year, while decreasing harmful pollutants and traffic congestion.
Metro 30-day rolling passes start at $70 and are available for sale at Metro’s Sales Office in the Mercantile Building, 120 E. Fourth Street, across from the Government Square transit hub, on weekdays, 7:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. There is a limit of one umbrella per customer.
