The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department today announced the continuation of a pilot program that will restrict visitor parking on the city street near Coit Tower on weekends this summer from June 4 through Sept. 25.
The pilot program will restrict parking on weekends to nearby residents with an "A" permit. Instead of parking near Coit Tower, visitors are encouraged to park their cars at the bottom of the hill and take the 39 Coit Muni bus to the top. In addition to the environmental benefit of reducing greenhouse gases from vehicle congestion, the pilot program is intended to improve the operation of the 39 Coit on weekends when most visitors go to Coit Tower and significant traffic congestion can occur. The pilot program restrictions only affect weekend parking; non-residents can still park near Coit Tower under the current 30-minute time limit on weekdays.
This pilot program is a collaborative effort between the Parking and Traffic Committee of the Telegraph Hill Dwellers, the Recreation and Park Department (which operates Coit Tower) and the SFMTA. A marketing outreach effort is underway to promote awareness of this change. Brochures, web links and other collateral are being distributed to all major nearby tourist destinations (Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf) and through the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau (SFCVB).
Visitors wishing to catch the 39 Coit to Coit Tower will find a convenient stop near Fisherman's Wharf at North Point and Stockton streets.
