First Transit Wants You to Do Your Part for Earth Day and Every Day

First Transit Inc., celebrates Earth Day this year by encouraging Americans to use public transportation to help improve their community’s environment.

Earth Day is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the environment. It is celebrated in 175 countries every year and has been a recognized event for more than 40 years.

*Green Public Transportation Facts:

  • The use of public transportation generally saves the United States 4.2 billion gallons of gasoline annually.
  • Households located near public transit facilities drive an average of 4,400 fewer miles than households with no access to public transit, reducing an individual household’s gasoline use by 223 gallons per year.
  • One person switching to public transit can reduce daily carbon emissions by more than 4,800 pounds in a year.

This year, several of the 226 First Transit-managed and First Transit-operated locations are providing free bus service and educating the public about local transportation services in their area during the week of April 22 in celebration of Earth Day.

“I am pleased with the efforts many of our locations are making to educate their communities on the environmental benefits of public transportation,” said Brad Thomas, president, First Transit and First Vehicle Services. “By celebrating this event at our locations we hope to highlight how easy it is to make greener lifestyle choices, such as utilizing local public transit systems.”
