The number of riders on Clinton County Public Transit has decreased significantly over the last few years, hitting an all-time low last year of 130,000 one-way rides. Other factors driving down revenues include Medicaid users switching to taxi-like services, the increasing cost of bus maintenance and an expensive contract with an out-of-state vendor who manages the bus system. That all added up to bust the budget.
In recent years the county has used general funds to help pay for transit. This year, they used about $300,000 in taxpayer dollars.
The county announced last year it would try a deviated route, combining the paratransit service and general service to see if that could help save some money.
