The governing board of Chatham Area Transit is holding itself to a higher standard of conduct and ethics from now on.

CAT Board Chairman Howard French said his board has voted to adopt a new code of conduct. The majority vote of the CAT Board overruled opposition from members Chester Ellis, Jay Jones and Tabitha Odell — all Chatham County Commissioners — who voted against the new policy during a recent meeting.

Introducing the policy proposal a couple of days prior to the CAT Board’s vote, French said that it’s now been a few months since he broached the idea of a new ethics policy with the board. The goal, he told his colleagues, was to protect CAT in the future by implementing a standard policy that is embraced by auditors and regulators alike.
