WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) - A new report says Metrorail employees are overworked and warns that fatigue could lead to accidents and mistakes.
The study is to be presented Thursday to Metro's board of directors.
The report is the result of a five-month partnership between the transit authority and the Tri-State Oversight Committee, which reviews safety.
The long hours are worked by train operators, supervisors, maintenance technicians and other employees in safety-critical jobs.
Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said Metro will reserve comment until the final report is presented.
There are no federal rules limiting the number of hours transit employees can work, and the report says many employees work long hours to earn overtime and increase their retirement benefits and because of extensive repair work needed on the system.
