CA: Driver Turns onto Train Tracks in Palo Alto

A driver made a wrong turn Tuesday night and ended up on the train tracks in Palo Alto, a police spokesman said.

Police responded to a call of a Toyota Prius on the northbound tracks near the East Meadow Drive crossing at about 9 p.m. A Caltrain headed to San Francisco avoided plowing into the car.

"He's lucky the train stopped," the spokesman said.

The driver turned right onto the Caltrain right of way, likely because he thought it was Alma Street or a GPS unit had provided faulty directions, according to police.

No injuries were reported and the man was able to drive his car off the tracks. Police said alcohol wasn't a factor.
