The Harris County Metropolitan Transit Authority issued the following news release:
METRO Police and the Safety Department are continuing their investigation of the fatal accident involving a light-rail vehicle technician at METRO's Rail Operations Center (ROC) yesterday evening shortly before 6 p.m.
Preliminary information shows that Chung T. Luu was onboard a light-rail vehicle that was being moved into the shop's service lane. While the train was in motion, Luu reportedly stuck his head out of the train's door, hitting a support beam in the shop. The 45-year old died at the scene.
Chung Luu leaves behind a wife and three children. METRO's condolences go out to his family and the focus right now is to ensure they have all the support they need. Crisis counseling has also been made available to all employees at the ROC.
In a letter issued to employees, METRO President and CEO George Greanias said, "When I visited with Chung's fellow employees at the ROC last night, they had nothing but good things to say about him as a friend and a co-worker. Please keep Chung's family in your hearts and prayers during this very difficult time."
Luu had been with METRO since April 2000, and had been working at the ROC since 2003.
