Metro services will be suspended in parts of Newcastle and Gateshead on Sunday to allow for the latest phase of a modernisation programme.

Metro services will be suspended in parts of Newcastle and Gateshead on Sunday to allow for the latest phase of a modernisation programme.

Trains will not run between Monument and Pelaw, with a replacement bus service, 900, calling at all stations on the affected route.

In addition, Jesmond station will also be closed all day for maintenance, with trains passing through without stopping.

Some early morning trains running south towards Pelaw will also be cancelled on Monday, July 4. Passengers travelling before 7am are advised to leave a little extra time for their journey as a result.

The line closure is part of the Nexus £385m Metro: all change modernisation programme and will allow track and technology to be replaced safely by engineers.

Ken Mackay, director of rail and infrastructure for Nexus said: "This work is vital for Metro's future. Closing lines for short periods allows us to work safely with the minimum inconvenience to passengers." Richard McClean, managing director of Metro Operator DB Regio, said: "We shall be providing a frequent and reliable bus service so that passengers can still get where they need to do with as little delay as possible."
