April 27--POULSBO -- A fire Friday in Kitsap Transit's North Base bus barn was caused by a mechanical failure in one of the buses, the Kitsap County Fire Marshall's Office announced Tuesday.

The fire broke out in the air conditioning unit of the 44-passenger bus, destroying it. The windows in the bus next to it blew out from the extreme heat.

The bus was not running when a Kitsap Transit employee noticed smoke coming from it. The fire is believed to have started while the bus was operating, then continued to burn once it was turned off, said Tina Turner, deputy fire marshall. The specific cause of the fire was unknown, but it was in the area of the condenser.
