General Manager/CEO

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District (NICTD)

NICTD, a regional commuter railroad headquartered in Chesterton, IN, is looking for a railroad/public transportation professional to serve as General Manager/CEO.  He/she will build on the foundation that the incumbent, who is retiring in 2014, has created, running the “South Shore” commuter rail service between South Bend and Chicago for the last 30 years.

With 250 represented/50 management employees, South Shore’s $38M annual budget supports 41 weekday/21 weekend trains, serving over 4M customers/yr.  Fares cover 48% of the budget.  NICTD also invests $15M/yr in capital improvements to keep 99 miles of track, 13 stations, bridges, signals, catenary and 82 railcars in a state of good repair.

The next General Manager/CEO will also generate support for/execute NICTD’s recently released 20-Year Strategic Business Plan, which proposes over $1B to expand and maintain South Shore’s world-class service.

Candidates must have exceptional interpersonal skills and will work closely with the NICTD Board and its Chair to conduct day-to-day operation of the railroad, including finance & administration, planning, policy analysis, procurement, contract management, capital project implementation, marketing, customer service, legal, technology and safety.  He/she will be particularly adept at handling external relations with federal, state and local stakeholders, funding & regulatory partners, FTA, FRA, DHS, Metra, Amtrak, and an exclusive freight franchise using NICTD’s ROW.
