Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority Administrator Tom Cahir was invited to participate on “Governor Baker’s Expert Panel” for the Governor’s Council on Older Adults. The objective of the panel was to inform the Council relative to transportation and mobility for older adults including the role of public services and innovative initiatives to improve access and service to seniors.
Administrator Cahir spoke about several new initiatives his agency (CCRTA) is implementing to combat isolation and improve mobility for Cape Cod’s senior population including:
- Free fare Wednesdays (60+)
- Loaner buses for Councils on Aging
- Collaborations with COA’s- increased funding and vehicle choices
- Improved training opportunities for Council on Aging Drivers
- Periodic meeting with senior agencies to share thoughts and ideas
Tom Cahir stated, “With our somewhat unique demographic indicating a very significant senior population residing in Barnstable County, I am proud of the great work and creative ideas our staff has accomplished to meet their transportation needs. Our close collaboration with the regions COA’s has been instrumental in making a positive difference.”
Information from this session will be used to develop recommendations to the Baker Administration toward improving senior mobility throughout Massachusetts.
