In order to better serve the mobility needs of San Mateo County, the Transportation Authority is helping to fund five new shuttle routes with Measure A Local Shuttle Program funds to better serve high-traffic corridors around the county, with a sixth to begin service in August.
The Skyline College Express connects the Skyline campus with the Daly City Caltrain Station, offering students a more effective transit option. This shuttle is sponsored by the San Mateo Community College District, and has already been expanded due to its popularity. This provides another option for students and faculty that previously faced a 45 minute commute from the Daly City BART Station.
The County Park Explorer offers residents of East Palo Alto, East Menlo Park and North Fair Oaks an opportunity to visit Edgewood County Park in Redwood City and Wunderlich County Park in Woodside. The San Mateo County Parks Department has sponsored this weekend shuttle to offer and encourage underserved communities to take advantage of San Mateo County’s parks. Previously, neither park had an adequate connection to public transit.
The Coastside Beach Shuttle provides coastside residents a new mobility option to visit Half Moon Bay’s beautiful beaches. Sponsored by San Mateo County, the weekend shuttle will run from Poplar State Beach to Pillar Point Harbor with a connection to Downtown Main Street.
The city of San Carlos has gained two new shuttles; the San Carlos Commuter shuttle will run a loop from Holly to Industrial to Quarry to Old County, connecting the Palo Alto Medical Center and local employers on the east side of town with the San Carlos Caltrain Station, while the San Carlos Community shuttle will connect the Eaton Park neighborhood with Carlmont High School and Caltrain, bringing mobility access to approximately 5,000 students and relieving traffic along Alameda de las Pulgas. The city of San Carlos sponsored both shuttles, while SamTrans was an additional co-sponsor of the San Carlos Community shuttle.
In August 2017, the Connect San Mateo shuttle is anticipated to begin service, running from the downtown San Mateo Caltrain Station on 1st Avenue, to North Shoreview to North Central and back downtown. This route is co-sponsored by SamTrans and the City of San Mateo as a part of the Connect San Mateo program.
These additional routes will bring the total number of shuttle routes funded by the Transportation Authority to 38. All of these routes will be funded by a combination of Measure A funds and contributions from the sponsoring agencies. The TA approved these new routes in May 2016.
