The Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) recently installed four new bus shelters and five new benches in the City of Denton. The agency confirmed eight locations for the new bus shelters and benches last fall, and completed installation during the first week of January 2016. Each location that DCTA chose had either a bus shelter or bench installed.
DCTA stated that it chose the eight locations for the new bus shelters and benches based on high ridership data and requests from the public and City of Denton — who helped expedite the permit process so the agency could quickly address the community’s need for new bus shelters and benches. Below is a list of the eight locations in Denton that received new bus shelters and benches:
- Bell and Administration – two new benches along Connect Routes 4 and 5
- Oak and Cedar (St. Andrews) – new bus shelter along Connect Routes 7, 8 and 9
- University at Walmart – new bus shelter along Connect Route 6
- Dallas Drive at Teasley – new bus shelter along Connect Route 1
- Charlotte St. and Avenue H – new bench along Connect Route 7
- Oak and Fry – new bench along Connect Routes 7 and 9
- University at Bonnie Brae – new bench along Connect Route 6
- Elm at Fall Meadow – new bus shelter along Connect Route 5
“Addressing the needs of the communities we serve is a top priority for DCTA, and we have worked diligently to install new bus shelters and benches to improve the quality of our passengers’ experience when they use our services,” said Jim Cline, DCTA president.
Last summer, DCTA received grant funding from the North Central Texas Council of Government (NCTCOG) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for purchasing and installing new bus shelters and benches. The total project budget was $150,000.
The new bus shelters are Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant, and DCTA plans to install solar lighting at each shelter to enhance visibility at night. Other bus shelter amenities include:
- Composite wood benches and expanded-metal panels
- Trash receptacles at each location
DCTA currently has 240 bus stops with 26 of these locations having bus shelters and benches. The agency plans to add new bus shelters and benches to 16 more locations in Denton — with eight of these locations to be installed with new bus shelters and benches by spring 2016.
