Cubic Awarded Contract to Support Traffic Scotland Service

Oct. 9, 2015

Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) on Oct. 8, announced it was awarded the Traffic Scotland Systems Contract by Transport Scotland. The contract will support the delivery of the Traffic Scotland functionality on all of the major road construction schemes. Delivering a single integrated service of critical Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) infrastructure across Scotland's trunk road network, this award extends Cubic's 20-year history of successfully delivering services to the region through Transport Scotland.

Supported by technology partner, IBI Group, also a Transport Scotland services provider, Cubic was awarded the national contract following a procurement process. Under the new contract, Cubic and IBI Group will continue to support the future and current needs of Transport Scotland to enhance their ability to efficiently manage the trunk roads that are crucial to Scotland's economy.

"Traffic Scotland is a high profile service delivered by Transport Scotland on behalf of Scottish Ministers. It aims to provide a high quality public service and deliver a safe and reliable trunk road network," said Hugh Gillies, head of network operations at Transport Scotland. "The technology supporting the delivery of the Traffic Scotland Service comprises a range of intelligent transport systems (ITS), modern computing and communications technologies. These are used to collect information about the road network, to help us manage it efficiently while also providing real time journey planning information to road users.

"The Cubic Transportation Systems bid showed a clear focus on delivery while presenting the best value for the public purse. We look forward to working together to enhance the services that the Traffic Scotland Service delivers," added Gillies.

Cubic delivered the core traffic management system for Transport Scotland in the mid-90s, and has maintained and developed it consistent with technology advances. IBI Group created the infrastructure, including the website, which delivers traffic information and journey time service. The collaboration between Cubic and IBI Group delivers efficiency and reliability by creating a single integrated system of incident management, traffic information services, journey time alerts, closed-circuit TV (CCTV) systems and data warehousing.

"We are extremely proud to continue this great partnership with Transport Scotland and look forward to working together to deliver a safe, efficient, cost-effective and sustainable transport system for the benefit of Scotland's travelers," said Chris Bax, managing director of Cubic ITMS, a subsidiary of Cubic Transportation Systems.

"Our partnership with Cubic is a result of many years of collaboration, and we look forward to continuing to deliver innovative services and solutions to Transport Scotland in the coming years," said Graeme Scott, director of IBI Group.
