The event commemorated the abolition of slavery in the British Empire and provided a unique, in-person experience, to reflect on the historic and dangerous journey that formerly enslaved people took to reach freedom in Canada.

On July 31, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) hosted the annual Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride, in support of Blackhurst Cultural Centre (formerly A Different Booklist Cultural Centre), to mark Emancipation Day.

The event commemorated the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. It also provided a unique, in-person experience, to reflect on the historic and dangerous journey that formerly enslaved people took to reach freedom in Canada.

“The TTC is proud to host the annual Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride, which marks an important part of Canadian history,” said TTC Chair Jon Burnside. “On behalf of the Board, I thank Blackhurst Cultural Centre and the TTC team for organizing this meaningful and engaging experience, celebrating freedom and supporting our ongoing efforts to confront anti-Black racism.”

The Emancipation Day Underground Freedom Train Ride was opened to the public and traveled non-stop between Union and Downsview Park stations, with up to 1,200 participants. A special Emancipation Day event at Downsview Park Station followed the ride and featured a display of song, drums and moments of reflection.

“The TTC welcomes the opportunity to host the Underground Freedom Train Ride every year,” said TTC CEO Rick Leary. “My thanks to our dedicated team, and our partners, for organizing this special event. Observing Emancipation Day is just one way we are working hard to build a more equitable, inclusive and welcoming transit system for everyone.”
