CityBus Helps You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

Dec. 30, 2015

As 2015 draws to a close you’re probably reflecting on your successes and challenges from the past 365 days and wondering how you can make 2016 even better. It’s time to make your New Year’s resolutions and, with CityBus’ help, you can achieve them.

According to Nielsen.com, five of the top ten resolutions for 2015 were (in no particular order) to get fit, enjoy life to the fullest, spend less, learn something new, and read more.

If your list of resolutions for 2016 includes all or some of these goals, utilizing greater Lafayette’s public transit service—CityBus—is one way to tackle them all at once. It’s multitasking at its finest.

  • Resolution #1 - Get fit: Public transit commuters get significantly more exercise than those who drive themselves to their destinations. A study of 12,000 people by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service and published July 2015 in the online journal PLOS One found a “…a robust association between active commuting and lower body mass index …” and that active commuting has a greater effect on BMI. Walking to and from the bus stop to your destinations adds up. Switch to riding the bus and you’ll automatically be more active.
  • Resolution #2 - Enjoy life to the fullest: Enjoying life fully includes stressing less. Public transit eliminates your need to deal with frustrating traffic, drivers and parking. Instead you can listen to music, read, answer emails or relax while you ride.
  • Resolution #3 - Spend less: Those who switch from driving their own car to taking public transit for their daily commute can save on average more than $774 per month—$9,286 per year—according to the American Public Transportation Association’s November 2015 Transit Savings Report. The savings is based on the costs of owning and driving a vehicle such as car payments, insurance and fuel expenses. Live with one less car and watch the savings add up.
  • Resolution #4 - Learn something new: Do you know how to navigate the CityBus system? Learn to ride the bus to get where you’re going. Plan a trip on the CityBus website or Google Transit or view maps and schedules online or in person at CityBus Center. Travel Training is available if you’d like more help. Email [email protected] or call 745-420-2989 for more details.
  • Resolution #5 - Read more: Is there a book you’ve not made time to read in 2015? You’ll have time to read while you ride public transportation. Commute via CityBus and enjoy a good book while the CityBus driver safely gets you to your destination.

“When you’re writing your list of New Year’s resolutions, be sure to include ‘ride CityBus’ at the top,” says Tonya Agnew, manager of development. “Whether your family is able to live with one less car or if you resolve to use CityBus for a trip or two a week, you’ll reap the benefits. Travel to work and school. Run your errands. Get to your appointments. And keep your New Year’s resolutions while you do it all.”
