David Cangany, South Bend Public Transportation Corp. (Transpo) general manager, has been elected president of the Indiana Transportation Association (ITA). The ITA represents public transportation, intercity and private bus operators, commuter rail and other transportation-related agencies and businesses throughout the state of Indiana. The ITA serves as a liaison with local and state government along with governmental agencies, such as the Indiana Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration.
“This is a critical time for transportation in the state of Indiana as we work to increase funding on both the state and federal level”, said Cangany. “During the last legislative session, the ITA successfully lobbied for the first state funding increase in seven years and I look forward to leading the organization as we continue to build on that momentum”, continued Cangany.
The transit industry has a significant impact on the Indiana economy with major bus manufacturers spending more in Indiana than any other state. A total of $400 million dollars a year is spent on Indiana made components such as engines, lighting and seating along with the small bus manufacturing in Northern Indiana. “Indiana is a leader in the transit industry and I look forward to working closely with our membership and advancing our mission”, stated Cangany.
Cangany has been a member of the ITA Board of Directors since 2013. He is also actively involved in the industry on a national level through the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) and is a member of the Leadership APTA Class of 2015.
