ABB exhibited two products that made their world debut at InnoTrans 2016, the Bordline BC ultra-compact battery charger and Effilight lightweight traction transformer.

Compact Battery Charger for Rolling Stock Applications

The Bordline BC incorporates silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductors, enabling a more compact design, high power density, high reliability and easy maintenance. It is fed by a three-phase AC input and generates a DC voltage to charge the vehicle batteries and/or supply DC loads.

The converters operate at high switching frequencies allowing for low ripple voltage and compact build size.

The compact device allows flexible mounting in a standard 19-inch electronic rack shelve or integration into any other on-board equipment. All electrical iterfaces are located in the front for easy and fast connection. It is suited for most railway applications and fully compatible with many train batteries.

  • AC voltage input: 3 x 400v AC 50 Hz
  • DC voltage output, nominal: 24/36/110v DC
  • Maximum DC output power: 6.4/10/10 kW
  • Protection degree (rack-mounted): IP20
  • Operating temperature range: -40°C … +70°C
  • Charging characteristics: UloU
  • BUS interface: CANopen
  • Dimensions (LxWxH): 400x222x132 mm
  • Weight: 10 kg

Effilight Traction Transformers

The Effilight transformer features a unique patented design which significantly reduces oil volume, providing energy savings for rail operators and weight reductions for train manufacturers. The flexibility in design saves weight and improves energy efficiency in comparison to a standard solution. The Effilight is suitable for roof, machine room and underframe installation.
