Siemens Builds Streetcars Upgradeable to Light Rail Operation

Oct. 5, 2011

Siemens has multiple aspects of its operation on display to show the full spectrum of products and services offered.

Siemens was recently awarded a contract from Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), on behalf of the city of Atlanta. Siemens will provided four new streetcars.

The streetcars are fully upgradeable for future light rail operation as the regional system grows. The updated platform is a shorter vehicle with a coupler attached to the front.

According to Siemens Communication Consultant Robert Bartels, the streetcars were developed to run at lower speeds and with more traffic, in larger cities.

The new streetcars are based on the Siemens S70 light rail vehicle platform, which was designed in the United States. This platform is currently in operation in cities such as Houston, Charlotte, San Diego, Portland and Salt Lake City.
