Miami-Dade County has awarded a contract for improvements to baggage-handling systems at Miami International Airport (MIA) to Parsons-Odebrecht Joint Venture.

The project will replace the in-line security screening portion of the South Terminal baggage-handling system (BHS) and will install an automated sortation system for the Central Terminal BHS, including outbound baggage conveyance systems, electrical modifications and power distribution systems, mechanical modifications, a 60,000-square-foot addition to the existing terminal building and a post-security corridor connecting Terminals G and H.

The contract for pre-construction services is $7.5 million, with a not-to-exceed construction budget of $177 million. The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is supporting the project with a grant to Miami-Dade County of $101 million. The Miami-Dade Aviation Department, which manages MIA, has set a goal of Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for the project. Local small business and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise “DBE” participation in the project is estimated to be more than $25 million, with some 600 local direct and indirect jobs to be created. Upon completion, the project will significantly improve MIA’s security and operating efficiency.

Collaborating for more than a 15 years, the ParsonsOdebrecht Joint Venture has successfully delivered several construction projects for MIA, including the South Terminal expansion, the complete reconstruction of the North Terminal, and construction of the guideway and stations for the MIA Mover.
