APTA honors five transit agencies with 2024 Bus Safety, Security and Emergency Management Awards

The 2024 award winners were rewarded in categories based on bus ridership and submissions are evaluated on criteria including effectiveness, benefit, innovation and transferability.

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) honored five public transportation providers from Georgia, Texas and Washington with 2024 Bus Safety, Security and Emergency Management Awards. The association also awarded one transit agency from Indiana with a Certificate of Merit. The awards recognize transit organizations for their innovative and proactive programs. 

“Congratulations to the award-winning public transit systems for their successful safety, security and emergency management programs that are models of excellence for the public transportation industry,” said APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas. “The implementation of these initiatives demonstrates the ongoing commitment to improving safety and security for their passengers, employees and communities.” 

Nominations are evaluated on four criteria:  

  1. Effectiveness 
  2. Benefit level 
  3. Innovation  
  4. Transferability

The 2024 Bus Safety, Security and Emergency Management Award winners are honored in categories based on bus ridership. The top honor is the Gold Award, which is presented to organizations with the best example of a safety, security or emergency management program. A Certificate of Merit is given to organizations in recognition of exceptional achievement in safety, security or emergency management.  

The 2024 winners are: 

Bus Safety Award 

Gold winner 

  • Clark County Public Transportation Benefit Area Authority – More than 3 million and fewer than 15 passenger trips annually 
  • Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) – More than 15 million and fewer than 50 million passenger trips annually 

Bus Security Award 

Gold winner   

  • Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority – More than 15 million and fewer than 50 million passenger trips annually 
  • Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority (CCRTA) – More than 3 million and fewer than 15 million passenger trips annually 

 Certificate of Merit winner 

Indianapolis Public Transportation Corporation – More than 3 million and fewer than 15 million passenger trips annually 

Bus Emergency Management Award 

Gold winner 

CCRTA – More than 3 million and fewer than 15 million passenger trips annually 

“We’re always looking for innovative ways to keep our employees and customers safe,” said MARTA General Manager and CEO Collie Greenwood, whose agency was recognized with a Gold Bus Safety Award. “The Bus Hazard Reporting Safety Campaign engages all levels of the agency, from executive leadership to frontline workers, in pursuit of safe, quality bus service and instills a proactive safety culture throughout the authority.”
