When Raymond Mui was growing up in New York City, transit was a regular part of life. As a teenager in Montgomery County, Maryland, he continued his favor of transit and even became a member of the Ride On Transit advisory group because he regularly rode the system.

Mui went to Purdue University, where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering with a specialization in transportation planning. He was hired by the Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Corp. (CityBus) while still in college, where he worked on grant programs, CAD/AVL projects, route planning, scheduling and operator scheduling.

Mui got CityBus a $2.18 million TIGGER grant for three wind turbines to power agency facilities.

He earned his CDL at CityBus, so he could go out on routes to get firsthand experience operators are tackling on a daily basis.

After graduating, Mui was hired as the transit planning and scheduling manager for the Alexandria Transit Co. (DASH) in Alexandria, Virginia.

As part of his duties, Mui is involved with long- and short-range planning, operator scheduling, technology projects, review of city development plans and interagency coordination with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) in Washington, D.C. He also assists the DASH general manager with budgeting, capital projects, vehicle specifications, rider analysis and performance measures. In 2012, he took on a project to provide a new shuttle system and over the years has worked to find efficiencies to stem service reductions due to budget constraints.

In 2014, Mui was promoted to director of planning and scheduling for DASH.

“I’ve always been surrounded by mass transit, so growing up, it was always something I wanted to work in.”

“I enjoy working in the industry because it’s something I enjoy personally and something I’m very passionate about ; it’s something I believe in.”

"I want to see transit evolve how it’s perceived in this country, not just as an afterthought or something only seen for transit-dependent folks.”
