Santa Fe City Council Votes to Withdraw From North Central Regional Transit District

Albuquerque Journal

The Santa Fe City Council voted unanimously Monday night to withdraw from the North Central Regional Transit District - but only if Santa Fe County votes to do the same thing.

"I think I'm at a loss with coming up with a decision here until we see where the county is and what their cards are," Councilor Matthew Ortiz said after the council's special session.

If the Santa Fe County Commission decides not to withdraw from the district - it is scheduled to vote on the matter Monday - the City Council will also remain in the regional transportation alliance.

"I would hope we would keep the regional concept. All we're asking is the county allow it to go out to a vote and let the people make the decision," NCRTD executive director Josette Lucero said.

Lucero was referring to a proposed 0.125 percent increase in the gross receipts tax of four northern New Mexico counties that the alliance is seeking to put on the November ballot. If approved by voters, the current plan calls for half the funds generated in Santa Fe County to go toward operating expenses for the Rail Runner Express commuter train and half to surface transportation costs.

The City Council also agreed Monday that, in the event the city remains part of the transit district, it will develop a plan with the regional entity that would distribute 86 percent of the surface transportation money to the Santa Fe Regional Planning Authority for services related to the Rail Runner. The remaining 14 percent would be controlled by the district and would be put toward transit services from other communities that would connect with the train in Santa Fe.
