CAT Buses May Run on Saturdays in Concord

Concord Monitor (New Hampshire)

NEW HAMPSHIRE - Next year, buses might run through Concord on Saturdays. A new route might take people from downtown to Concord Hospital. And the trolleys might be gone for good.

These scenarios are among several that consultants envision as they wrap up a study of Concord's public transit system. With surveys, interviews and a market analysis finished, they're prepared to recommend changes that include adding Saturday bus service and designating one bus to run to the hospital.

But the consultants say they're trying to contain their recommendations within the system's current budget and any expansions to the bus service would likely come with corresponding cuts. Running buses on Saturdays could mean paring back hours during the week. Adding a line to the hospital could mean cutting the Industrial Park route.

A public meeting will be held tonight for people to weigh in on the proposed changes.

"That's going to hurt some people, so we want to hear (from them)," said Rodrigo Marion, the chief transportation planner for the Central New Hampshire Regional Planning Commission.

The planning commission worked with Nelson\Nygaard, consultants who specialize in transportation, on a four-month study of Concord Area Transit. The study was paid for by federal money, citizens group Concord 2020 and the Community Action Program of Belknap- Merrimack Counties, and it identified redundancies in the bus routes along with underserved destinations.
