Mobis Transportation/Bikestation, the nation’s only turnkey bicycle/alternative transportation transit system, recently announced it has signed an agreement with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) for the licensing of the Bikestation name and administration of all membership and access control of the new Bikestation Washington, D.C. The new flagship bicycle transit facility, which occupies prime real estate at Union Station just blocks from the Capitol, was designed, planned and executed in a public/private agreement between Mobis Transportation/Bikestation and DDOT.

According to Jim Sebastian, supervisory transportation planner for DDOT, “Bikestation helped us understand and create a bike-transit center at Union Station that will be a huge boost to cycling in D.C. It will help us meet environmental, transportation, and quality of life goals, and will be an icon for the District. Because Bikestation plans and operates many such facilities, they were able to offer us first-hand recommendations throughout the process. Their professionalism and client attention definitely helped move this project along in a highly complex environment. We would very much recommend Bikestation to any agency. We couldn’t have done this without them.”

Under terms of the new agreement, Mobis Transportation/Bikestation will administer the membership and proprietary access control systems of the transit facility permitting members secure bicycle parking at the Bikestation 24 hours a day, seven days a week through an electronic key. This key will also provide members access to other Bikestations around the country.

Other services of the Bikestation, including daily staffing, bicycle repair, retail sales and bike rental will be provided in partnership with Bike and Roll Washington, D.C., local entity of a national bike rental and tour company with operations in five major cities in the United States.

Bikestation Washington, D.C. will open October 2, 2009.
