L.A. Metro Holds Job Readiness Fair to Recruit Women for Construction Industry Jobs

Metro and the construction industry are looking for women interested in joining their ranks during the “Women Build Metro Los Angeles Apprenticeship Readiness Fair”.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the construction industry are looking for women interested in joining their ranks during the “Women Build Metro Los Angeles Apprenticeship Readiness Fair” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, November 3, at Long Beach City College, 4271 Clark Avenue in Long Beach.

The readiness fair is open to all job seekers but is especially designed for women looking for quality jobs in the construction industry. Attendees will be able to learn about trade union apprenticeships, meet prime contractors, fill out apprenticeship applications and talk to women who have worked in the construction industry.

Los Angeles County Supervisor and Metro Board Member Janice Hahn will welcome attendees.

“Metro is building a 21st century transportation system here in LA County and that means there are good paying jobs available in the construction industry,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn.  “These are good jobs that can lead to good careers but for too long, women have been underrepresented in the field.  I encourage all job seekers, especially women, to attend this job fair and see if the construction industry is right for them.”

Metro needs a first-class workforce to deliver its multimodal programs including construction projects efficiently, on time and on budget; and delivering safe, reliable public transit service. To meet these crucial needs, Metro needs to fill positions both inside Metro and in the outside construction industry through workforce development and a career pathway to top paying jobs.

“Metro is looking to increase the number of women working at the agency and on transportation construction projects,” said Metro Deputy CEO Stephanie Wiggins. “The Apprenticeship Readiness Fair is the best way to get women informed and interested in these non-traditional employment opportunities.”

There are several Measure M projects getting ready to begin construction, including the Gold Line Extension to Claremont, the Metro Airport Connector and the third section of the Purple Line Extension to Westwood.

With these projects gearing up for construction, Metro’s workforce will also need to be increased in areas related to construction, including engineers, bus and rail operators, supervisors, managers, planners, office workers and other professional staff

Metro partners at the Apprenticeship Readiness Fair include Balfour Beatty Construction, SKANSKA, Build LACCD, the Electrical Training Institute of Southern California, Long Beach City College, the Los Angeles/Orange County Building and Construction Trades Council, PV Jobs and Women in Non Traditional Employment Roles (W.I.N.T.E.R.), City of LA-EWDD, LA Conservation Corp, LATTC, IBEW Local 11, DCFS, Walsh Shea, Brother’s Keeper, Hensel Phelps, FOLA, PCL Construction, the Youth Build Institute and the city of Los Angeles Bureau of Contract Administration.
