The Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority is celebrating the 27th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act by educating the community on CCRTA services and how they can assist the ADA community.
July 26, 2017 marks the 27th Anniversary of the signing of the ADA by President George H.W. Bush on July 26, 1990. The ADA and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 give civil rights protections to individuals with disabilities similar to those provided to individuals on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, age, and religion. The act also assure equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities for access to businesses, employment, transportation, state and local government programs and services, and telecommunications.
The CCRTA is an advocate for the ADA community and goes above and beyond ADA compliance with the help of the RTA Committee on Accessible Transportation (RCAT) to produce services and products that provide the ADA community with reliable and safe transportation.
RCAT was established to provide knowledge, guidance and insight to the CCRTA and the community on transportation for disadvantaged riders.
This week the CCRTA is presenting to various organizations on the services that they provide for disadvantaged riders such as B-Line, a curb to curb paratransit system and educating the community on their fixed route services and travel training options.
"Nearly 37 million people in our country have a disability and nearly 25 percent of today’s 20 year olds will experience disability in their lifetime," said Barry Whaley, director of the Southeast ADA Center.
Through the outreach, training and technical assistance the ADA National Network has done to promote voluntary compliance with the ADA, people with disabilities have better access to businesses, buildings, employment, state and local government programs and services, and increasing opportunities for equal and full participation in civic and community life.
