Say Anthony Jamal’s name to his co-workers and they all remember the same thing: a quiet and friendly guy. Now those same co-workers are preparing to lay Anthony, 51, to rest after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver.
Jamal was walking near 107th and Bradley Road on May 4th to catch a bus on his way to work when he was hit by a car. Police say the driver of the car fled the scene but then came back. She was arrested for drunk driving. Jamal was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries on May 18th.
“Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with Anthony’s family, all of Milwaukee County mourns their loss," said Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. "For nearly 22 years he served the public as a driver for MCTS. His dedication and commitment to this community will not be forgotten.”
Jamal started driving for MCTS in September of 1995. Over the years he’s received numerous commendations for his excellence behind the wheel and with passengers. Some recent praise from riders include statements like, “He was pleasant, polite and jovial. Thank you!” and, “He smiles and greet his passengers. He is also helpful and courteous.”
Jamal’s professionalism and kindness was on full display on May 3nd, the day before he was hit. Video from onboard the bus shows him helping and talking with passengers, and safely providing rides to hundreds of people.
Services for Anthony will take place on Saturday, May 27th at 1pm at the Christian Faith Fellowship Church at 8633 Good Hope Road. The public is welcome to attend.
