Biking around Auckland to see tattooists in action, portrait sketching and to visit High St art galleries is the best way to experience Artweek says Fleur Armstrong. Fleur was on the Artweek by Cycle tour organised by Auckland Transport and says it would have been a lot harder to visit the exhibits in a car.
“It’s quite easy to stop in and have a look at things and move on to the next thing when you’re on a bike. It’s been really cool,” said the Northcote resident.
The Artweek by Cycle tours have proved hugely popular and have been booked out. Starting on K Rd on Wednesday night, the cycle tour of 12 people went to the city centre via Myers Park. After visiting venues throughout the city centre, the tour followed the shared spaces to the Quay St Cycleway and then on to the silos at Silo Park to see Asylum by Peter Roche - one of the festival’s most popular attractions.
Steve Cho, who has recently started cycling to work, said the art was awesome and he really enjoyed cycling in the city at night. “Previously it was too dangerous to cycle but now with all the cycleways it’s a no-brainer. I’ve also been saving a few pennies because I’ve got a V8 that I haven’t been using because I’ve been cycling.”
Artweek, is held between 9-16 October and features over 1000 artists at more than 100 venues throughout Auckland.
