Starting on Monday, October 3, 2016, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) will begin preparing for the installation of new signs in 10 of BART stations. BART is required to check the work areas for hazards such as lead paint and asbestos. The sampling will occur between 8:30pm and 4am at the stations listed below. Work will be completed by Friday, October 7.

The contractors doing the sampling are required to wear various safety equipment such as special suits, masks, respirators, etc. This is part of regulations and is done for the safety of the workers. The sampling does not pose a danger to others in the area. The contractor will use ladders to access the areas to be tested in various sections of the station. They have been instructed to stay out of the way of passengers during revenue hours if possible. BART Safety Monitors will be present.

Once the testing results come back, BART will begin abatement work in stations where it is needed. At that time all proper precautions will be taken to protect everyone in the station. BART will post a new bulletin before that work begins.

The stations to be sampled are: 16th Street/Mission, 24th Street, 19th Street, San Leandro, West Oakland, Lake Merritt, Coliseum, Bay Fair, Hayward, and South Hayward.
