Earthquake Safety Work to Begin Inside Paid Area at Bay Fair Station

As part of BART's system-wide Earthquake Safety Program, work to strengthen structures at Bay Fair station to better withstand future earthquakes will move inside the paid area at the station in late August 2016.

As part of Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system-wide Earthquake Safety Program, work to strengthen structures at Bay Fair station to better withstand future earthquakes will move inside the paid area at the station in late August 2016. Work areas will be fenced in and riders may see large equipment accessing the site such as dump trucks, backhoes and lifts. During construction, pedestrian access in and around the station will change periodically. BART said riders should proceed around construction areas with caution and watch for signs with safety information and other notices. Riders can also expect temporary construction-related noise, dust, and traffic impacts. BART will monitor noise and dust and work to minimize any inconveniences.

Construction Work Details

  • Description: Constructing temporary enclosures, adding steel and concrete to foundations, strengthening column caps, relocation of AC Transit transfer machines and other equipment, and protecting utilities and equipment
  • Location: Various areas throughout and around the station, stairs and other locations
  • Start Date: Approximately late August 2016
  • Duration: Approximately 9 months
  • General Work Hours: Work can occur between the hours of 7 am and 7 pm, Monday through Saturday, with some night work and emergency work as necessary

Related work to strengthen the nearby Ashland Avenue underpass and station stairwells at Hayward Station will also occur between late 2016 and mid-2017. Earthquake Safety Program construction will be underway at various locations throughout the BART system over the next seven years, and is expected to be complete by the end of 2022. As always, safety is BART’s top priority. The agencies aim is to strengthen BART as quickly as possible, while maintaining BART service.
