TTC Employees Stand Together on National Day of Mourning

April 28, 2016
All across the Toronto Transit Commission, flags will be lowered to half-staff as a tribute to those in our workforce who have perished or suffered serious injury or illness in the workplace.

Today, Thursday, April 28, is National Day of Mourning. All across the Toronto Transit Commission, flags will be lowered to half-staff as a tribute to those in our workforce who have perished or suffered serious injury or illness in the workplace. This is a day, also, when employees are encouraged to take a personal moment to reflect on the importance of safety at the TTC.

CEO Andy Byford and union presidents - Bob Kinnear, ATU Local 113; Gaetano Franco, CUPE Local 2; Eric Althoff, IAMAW Lodge 235; and James Bingham, CUPE Local 5089 - released a joint message of reflection to all employees:

"Operating, maintaining and protecting, on a 24/7 basis, a system that carries the third largest ridership in North America requires a dedicated, committed and safety-focused workforce. Above all else, TTC employees are first committed to protecting the safety and health of their co-workers, their customers and the public living in the communities in which we operate. Safety is a core value and entrenched in our long-standing motto of Safety, Service, Courtesy."
