On Saturday, March 19, 2016 Valley Metro Rail will open its second light rail extension on 19th Avenue in Phoenix, giving more riders regional access to destinations across the Valley.

“This is a significant day for Phoenix,” said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. “The opening of the Northwest light rail extension will ease travel to school, work and entertainment. With the additional three-miles of track, riders have access to a 26-mile system, making connections from Dunlap Avenue, to downtown Phoenix, Tempe and into the heart of Mesa.”

Valley Metro and the City of Phoenix will host a community fair on opening day to celebrate and thank the 19th Avenue neighborhoods. Join the celebration and be one of the first to ride light rail on the new extension with a free commemorative pass, enjoy a community expo, free family-fun activities, food and entertainment. Light rail service will begin on the Northwest Extension at 10 a.m., on March 19.

Mayor Stanton and Vice Mayor Daniel Valenzuela announced the earlier opening date at a milestone event to celebrate the final phase of the new extension with vehicle testing and safety awareness. To view the event video, click here.

“The new 3.2-mile extension adds to our already existing 23 miles of light rail connectivity,” said Phoenix Vice Mayor Daniel Valenzuela. “Light rail to date has exceeded expectations by generating $8.2 billion in economic development and attracting riders at record levels. The Northwest Extension will connect six schools, places of worship, senior living facilities and approximately 300 businesses. This will provide another massive economic boost for District 5 and Phoenix and provide a crucial connection for thousands to the entire Valley.”
