San Antonio Colleges Celebrates Back to School with Via

Aug. 28, 2015

Joined by SAC students, President Dr. Robert Vela, and Via’s Chair Hope Andrade and President/CEO Jeff Arndt, SAC’s Gnome Ranger kicked off the new semester riding to SAC aboard one of Via’s newest Wi-Fi-enabled buses.  Via’s rider experience took SAC students on a field trip around campus to highlight the 20+ Via stops and multiple routes that lead to SAC. The Rider Experience culminated in SAC’s Mall area just in time for the Gnome Ranger’s birthday celebration.

The event, part of SAC’s Weeks of Welcome (WOW), helped usher in a new semester for SAC students while providing students an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of riding public transportation to campus.  During the festivities, Via provided information to students and featured an interactive display of the new Wi-Fi-enabled bus.

“Providing 4-G LTE Wi-Fi to our riders in all of our buses and transit centers is a significant step forward in connectivity for our riders,” said Arndt. “With this expansion and simultaneous upgrade to Via’s internet service, all of our riders will be able to take advantage of their commutes to finish work assignments, stay in touch with family and friends, or even study while they ride the bus.”

Via Metropolitan Transit is expanding the availability of free wireless internet service to encompass the agency’s fleet and facilities beginning Sept. 1.

“Via provides our students reliable, affordable transportation to/from campus,” said Dr. Robert Vela, President of San Antonio College. “Many students may not be aware that they can obtain a free Semester Bus Pass under the Campus Access Fee,” he continued.

The Alamo Colleges Campus Access Fee, which is automatically included in a student’s cost of attendance, allows students to park on campus and/or receive a Via Semester Bus Pass. Passes can be obtained at the Business Office with valid student ID.
