ACT 215 Awards Recognize Excellence in   Transportation Demand Management

The Association for Commuter Transportation (ACT) recognized 22 outstanding organizations and individuals in the transportation demand management (TDM) field during the recent ACT 2015 International Conference in Baltimore.

The awards are given annually for innovative concepts, creative solutions, professional achievement, and leadership.

"Each year, ACT members and their partners strive to bring better communal transportation options to choice and captive commuters," said Bill Anderson, ACT's executive director. "At ACT we are dedicated to sustainable transportation options and cost-effective mobility solutions for commuters, employers, and communities. These are transportation solutions for our future resilient cities. The 2015 ACT Annual Award winners were chosen by their peers as the best of the best."

The 2015 award winners include:

Bob Owens TDM Champions: Ron Steedly, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas

ACT's highest honor is reserved for innovative or entrepreneurial individuals who have demonstrated a career commitment to developing TDM and championing its advances. This award recognizes the highest level of professionalism and is the culmination of long-running dedication to the industry.

Cathy Cole Memorial Award for Telework: ICF International, New York

This award recognizes ongoing committed leadership and achievement in advancing strategies to enable and encourage more employers to adopt telework arrangements for employees.

Emerging Leader in TDM: Kelly Rector, Houston Energy Corridor, Houston

Presented by the ACT Board of Directors, this award recognizes new leadership in the TDM field.

Employee Transportation Coordinator (ETC) Champions: Esther Maycock-Thorne, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston

This award recognizes employee transportation coordinators (ETC) who have demonstrated exceptional creativity and innovation in providing commute alternatives to the worksite.

Excellence in Scholarship: GVF TMA, King of Prussia, Pennsylvania

The Excellence in Scholarship award acknowledges an ACT member for recent scholarly work in TDM, one of its sub-disciplines, or in a related field when the research demonstrates applicability to TDM goals. The research should have been conducted and submitted for publication, first published, or submitted for academic credit.

Excellence in Advocacy: Audrey DeBarros, 36 Commuting Solution, Louisville, Colorado; and Paul Mackie, Mobility Lab, Arlington, Virginia

This award acknowledges an ACT member whose advocacy efforts on behalf of TDM, whether at the local, state, and/or federal level, have been exceptional. The award celebrates effort, innovation, efficiency, and effectiveness, and includes both individual advocacy efforts along with the organization and encouragement of others' participation in advocacy.

Outstanding TMA: A Better City, Boston

This award recognizes the transportation management association (TMA or TMO) that has best used its public/private partnerships to achieve local and regional transportation goals.

Outstanding Public Sector Award: Town of Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Recognizes a public sector organization that developed and implemented a product, program, promotion, service, or marketing campaign designed to meet an identified commuter need or concern.

Outstanding Private Sector Award: RideScout, Washington, D.C.

Recognizes a private sector organization that developed and implemented a product, program, promotion, service, or marketing campaign designed to meet an identified commuter need or concern.

Outstanding University Award: University of California, Irvine, California

Recognizes the university that developed and implemented a product, program, promotion, service, or marketing campaign that was designed to meet an identified commuter need or concern.

Marketing and Outreach Awards for projects under $5,000 in cost

These awards recognize organizations that have developed and implemented a product, program, promotion, service, or marketing campaign designed to meet an identified commuter need or concern.

President's Award

  • Volunteer of the Year: Peggy Schwartz, North Bethesda TMD, Bethesda, Maryland; and Justin Schor, Wells & Associates, Tysons, Virginia
  • Chapter Volunteer of the Year: Larry Robinson, Sacramento Metro AQMD, Sacramento Valley Chapter
  • President's Award 2015: Chris Hamilton, Arlington County Commuter Services, Arlington, Virginia

These awards are given by ACT President Robert Henry, GVF TMA, to elected leaders, volunteers, and partners for excellence in the TDM field.
