Art in Transit Coming to Via

June 26, 2015

Via Metropolitan Transit’s Board of Trustees approved “Art in Transit” at their June meeting. The Art in Transit program’s mission is to increase the presence of public art in the agency’s development projects by including art in both existing and planned transit facilities and projects.

“Via is making a long-term commitment to the community with this program,” said Via President/CEO Jeff Arndt. “The fusion of public art with public transportation will improve and enliven the functional capacity of Via’s assets while enhancing the customer experience throughout our service area.”

Art in Transit will be administered by Via staff members in coordination with other entities. The program begins Oct. 1, and will be funded through Via’s capital construction program.

“The Art in Transit program, alongside the City’s Public Art San Antonio, speaks to the public sector’s commitment to enhancing San Antonio’s quality of life through art,” said Felix N. Padron, director of the city of San Antonio Department for Culture & Creative Development.

Several other transit systems, including Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) and Houston Metro, have similar local art programs that combine public art and transit.
