The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) received a Gold Award for safety as part of the American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) Safety and Security Excellence Awards. JTA was recognized during APTA’s Bus & Paratransit Conference on May 3, in Fort Worth, Texas.

“We are honored to be recognized by APTA for our safety accomplishments,” said JTA Chief Executive Officer Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. “The safety and security of our passengers and bus operators is paramount. It was critical that we implemented this program in conjunction with the system overhaul.”

JTA received the award for “The Foundation of a Complete Bus Overhaul”, a comprehensive safety program that was implemented prior to the Route Optimization Initiative (ROI). The program focused on bus operator training, bus stop location and accessibility as well as passenger security. The results included a 10 percent reduction in both preventable and non-preventable events.

“It was important that we created a targeted safety program prior to ROI,” said Colin Mulloy, Chief of Safety and Security. “We are pleased with the results we have experienced from the program.”

Colin Mulloy was invited by the Florida Transit Safety Network (FTSN) to give a presentation on lessons learned and the program’s transferability to other agencies throughout Florida at the FTSN Safety Summit next month in Tampa, Florida.
