The Toronto Transit Commission and BAI Canada have completed installation for free Wi-Fi service at all subway stations in the downtown "U" - from Bloor to Union to St George - and on Line 2 at Bay and Spadina stations, meeting a 2015 Customer Charter commitment.
"TTC customers can now get access to the real-time information that is important to them," said Chris Upfold, TTC Chief Customer Officer and Deputy CEO. "This week we reached a milestone in providing wireless internet connectivity at TTC subway stations. Taken together with initiatives such as being able to access next train information directly from our website this is another important step forward in modernizing the TTC."
"We are very pleased with the progress to date as we are now available to the 600,000-plus TTC subway riders who enter the active stations each day," said Ken Ranger, BAI Canada CEO "We look forward to deploying our high-capacity wireless and Wi-Fi underground network to all stations as part of our ongoing partnership with the TTC."
The service, branded as TConnect, allows access to the internet, including to email, social media, and real-time transit updates. Connecting is easy for TTC subway riders, who simply select "TConnect" in the settings of their wireless device, open their internet browser and click Connect on the TCONNECT home page. The network is available in all public areas of stations, including platforms, mezzanines, walkways and stairwells.
This service is financially supported through advertising and comes at no cost to the TTC or its customers.
The wireless system installed within TTC subway stations is also capable of allowing cellular connectivity once wireless service providers activate their service on the network.
Wi-Fi is scheduled to be activated at all remaining stations over the next two years.
