With the future of America’s public transportation, roads, bridges and rail systems on the line, Community Transit’s Board of Directors officially approved a resolution to recognize April 9, 2015 as Stand Up for Transportation Day (#SU4T).
By this act, Community Transit joins transportation and community leaders from across the country to call upon Congress for a long term, federal transportation bill. In Everett and throughout Snohomish County, transportation is key to job growth and our stronger-than-national economic recovery. Federal funding for transportation has declined in recent years, and we urge Congress to approve a long-term transportation funding bill to keep our local economy moving.
Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), Stand Up for Transportation Day unites the voices of 216 participating organizations in more than 140 communities across the country to focus on the urgency of the passage of a long-term, federal transportation bill.
The current federal transportation-funding bill, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21), is set to expire on May 31, 2015. Without a long-term federal transportation funding bill, Snohomish County and communities across the country will face tremendous uncertainty. Transportation is the backbone of our local and national economy. A long-term transportation bill is needed for better and expanded transportation options, and to continue to grow our economy.
Community Transit and Everett Transit will share their combined federal infrastructure needs in a co-authored, op-ed piece appearing in The Herald, April 9, 2015. The agencies address the need for outside funding so local budgets can focus on putting service on the road.
