Via Begins Service for 'The E'

March 30, 2015

Via Metropolitan Transit introduced a new circulator service for the downtown area on March 28. Called “The E,” the service was launched with an inaugural run highlighted by cascarones and mariachis. Via board members and staff, San Antonio Mayor Ivy R. Taylor, San Antonio City Councilman Robert Treviño, and community members participated in the celebration of this milestone.

“This is truly an exciting endeavor for Via,” said Via Board Chair Hope Andrade, who participated in the event. “The E will provide a much-needed and requested service in the downtown area, and we were fortunate to be able to partner with Centro San Antonio and the City of San Antonio to develop this service.”

The E is a Via six-month pilot program that runs along Commerce and Market Streets, as well as St. Mary’s and Navarro Streets. The service is provided by specially-branded orange-colored trolleys circulating Tuesdays through Saturdays from 6 p.m. to midnight. The E serves major entertainment venues, hotels, restaurants, cultural sites, and the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Thanks to a collaboration with Via’s partners, no fares will be charged to riders.

“The E will undoubtedly provide easy connections for people in the central business district, and it will be a great travel option for workers in the area,” said Via President/CEO Jeff Arndt. “It is just one more piece of the puzzle for a vibrant downtown.”
