Members of SEPTA’s Design Team are scheduled to greet morning commuters at 15th Street Station on Wednesday, March 25, with handouts and displays revealing brand new renderings of the upcoming 15th Street Station Accessibility Project. Three project information boards will remain posted at the station for passengers to examine.
Utilizing funding received through Pennsylvania’s new transportation funding law, ACT 89, SEPTA plans to begin a total renovation of the 15th Street Station in 2016. “Once completed, the station will be more userfriendly, accessible to all users, safer, easier to maintain, and in compliance with all applicable codes,” said SEPTA Deputy General Manager Jeffery D. Knueppel.
The capital project, budgeted at $20 Million Dollars will:
- Provide full access for riders with disabilities through new elevators and ramps to all levels of the station complex. New and wider ramped corridors connecting the station to the Broad Street Line will also be constructed.
- Improve passenger flow will be achieved with new and reconfigured fare lines, outfitted with new technology for the SEPTA Key Program in addition to new stairs and railings. Renovations will also provide more open area on the 15th Street Mezzanine and on the station platforms.
- Update Station Interiors and Systems including new architectural finishes, new signage, an Art-In-Transit installation, new lighting, additional public address systems, closed-circuit TV improvements and other passenger amenities.
SEPTA will continue to engage the public throughout the design process to provide information about the project and to hear feedback. These efforts will include information booths set up at the station and a future public meeting.
